The new coronavirus is not the only dangerous virus we know. Other viruses are as dangerous as the infamous coronavirus:

Ebola: the rapid killer with no cure

If a virus can cause fear in the 21st century it is the Ebola virus. Ebola can overwhelm the human immune system in a matter of days causing vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, rash, dementia, hemorrhages, and hiccups which ultimately leads to the death of the infected person.

Marburg Virus: Hemorrhagic Fever

The death rate for the Marburg virus ranges from 24% to 88%. Marburg virus causes bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract and skin. In most cases, patients eventually die because of the collapse of the circulatory system which triggers shock and multi-organ failure which ultimately results in death. Currently, there is no cure for Marburg hemorrhagic fever.

Swine Flu: Caused By H1N1 Virus

Swine Flu caused by the H1N1 virus killed an estimated 1,84,500 people and may have led to the deaths of as many as 5,79,000 while the actual number may be much higher.

SARS: Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) is caused by the SARS coronavirus. The virus spread to nearly 37 countries in a matter of weeks. SARS is an airborne virus which means it travels through the air. The SARS virus spreads in small droplets of saliva that is coughed or sneezed into the air by an infected person. The virus infected 8,000 people worldwide, about 800 of whom died.

Hepatitis

Hepatitis causes more than 1 million deaths each year. Hepatitis B causes the largest share of fatalities each year. The virus attacks the liver which results in either liver cancer or cirrhosis. Although the overall death rate from Hepatitis C is lower than B. It still kills an estimated 3,50,000 people every year.

HIV

Today, about 40 million people are living with HIV. Only half of those infected have access to drugs needed for treatment. So the global death rate from AIDS is still shockingly high. Estimates suggest there are nearly 2 million deaths every year and over the last 30 years the virus has claimed over 25 million lives.

Influenza

Every year, influenza is responsible for up to 5,00,000 deaths worldwide. The deadliest flu pandemic was the Spanish flu that killed around 50 - 100 million people worldwide. The pandemic is described as the greatest medical holocaust in history.
